“Closer Then You Think”

Philippians     4:4-7  (Church Bible page 1163)

Listen now

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything,

but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds

in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:4-7

(Church Bible p. 1163)

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (fear) but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”  2 Timothy 1:7

1.  Pray about everything.

…do not be anxious about anything…”  Philippians 4:6a

“…but everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your request to God…”Philippians 4:6b

“Prayer” = a wide variety of communication with God.

“Petition” = a particular communication with God; repeated appeal.

“With thanksgiving”

2.  Rejoice at all times.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”  Philippians 4:4

Key: “The Lord is near.”

3.  Be respectful to everyone

“Let your gentleness be evident to all.”  v.5a

“I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord.”  Philippians 4:2

          Euodia = Fragrant

Syntyche = Affable, polite, pleasant, easy to talk to.

Text Box: Application Questions
for Care Groups*
1.        Why does it seem difficult to pray about everything and to rejoice all the time?
2.        How do the four words “the Lord is near” help make this possible?
3.        The Bible says “Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near.”  What does the nearness of God’s manifest presence have to do with us showing respect to everyone else around us?
4.        What else in our lives would be affected if we really grasped the reality that “the Lord is near?”

*A Care Group is 8-12 people who meet every other week for sharing, prayer and Bible application.  If interested, please call the office at 770/921-1843 or email us at LACoffice@lilburn4Jesus.com.
